We had an amazing portrait session on the roads and fields surrounding my Boulder studio a couple weeks ago. Maddie is the most gorgeous model in NYC and needed a few more portraits for her portfolio. She rocked the light with her sparkling eyes and sun-kissed hair. She nailed each and every pose from the gold sequin backdrop and sitting on a tree stump in the middle of the road, to just smiling in the camera with her happy face. Maddie had her makeup done by the wonderful girls at Alchemy Mineral. It looks natural and radiant.
If you’re planning your high school senior photo session and you want images where you look this natural and beautiful, it takes a little planning and practice. Look through magazines and find poses that you love and bring them to me! We can create a secret Pinterest board to gather inspiration and creative ideas for your portrait session. Find clothing that matches the location we’re shooting. Or find clothing that completely contrasts the location we’re shooting. Maddie’s fancy black dress and high heels would be expected in an urban location, but out here with the country roads they are unexpected and more dramatic. Then, look in the mirror and practice the poses. Look for the angles of your face that are the most flattering. Practice smiling naturally. Practice your best serious face. It feels strange to think of practicing for a portrait session, but the images will be so much better in the end. At the end of a two hour portrait session, my models always get the very best images of the session because they are finally completely comfortable and have been practicing for the last two hours! If you begin your session comfortable and confident with some poses in mind, you will walk away with the most beautiful images of your life.
